How do I resolve PCMCIA conflicts?
PCMCIA motherboard resource conflicts prevent the Travelstar E external drive from being
configured.
Solution:
Some motherboards have both a primary and a secondary IDE port. If the primary IDE port is
enabled (most cases), the secondary IDE port is also enabled and cannot be disabled
separately. Unless some other device is connected to the secondary port, Windows 95 cannot
determine that the secondary Port Base 170 is already used. Windows 95 allocates the I/O
resource normally used by the secondary IDE port (170Hex base and IRQ 15) to the PC Card. This
results in a conflict and no drive letter or icon is assigned to the Travelstar E external
drive.
To resolve the conflict, perform the following steps:
- Insert the Travelstar E PCMCIA card into the slot on your notebook.
- Click Start, select Settings, then Control Panel.
- Double-click on the System icon.
- Select the Device Manager tab.
- Click on the plus sign (+) next to Hard disk controllers.
- Double-click on the Standard IDE/ESDI controller. If more than one entry is present, use the
last one.
- Select the Resources tab and disable the "Use automatic settings" by clicking on
the checkbox to remove the check mark.
- Click on each of the entries listed in the Resource settings box, then click on Change
Setting button to change the settings to a resource that does not have a conflict.
- Click OK when you are finished, then re-boot your notebook.

How do I partition and format Travelstar E using Windows NT?
Disk Admininstrator is used to partition and format drives under Windows NT. To partition
and format Travelstar E:
- Select Start, Settings, Administrative Tools, Disk Administrator.
- Highlight the unknown partition on drive x:, where drive x: is your Travelstar E
drive. Click on the partition to highlight it.

- Select Commit Changes Now from the Partition drop-down menu.
- Highlight the unpartitioned space on the Travelstar E.
- Select Create from the Partition drop-down menu.
- Select Commit Changes Now from the Partition drop-down menu.
- Click your right mouse button on the new partition and select Format.
Note: You can choose to format the partition as FAT16 or NTFS. If you choose FAT16,
you will have to repeat the steps above to create another partition. This is due to a
limitation of the FAT16 file system of 4GB per partition in NT. If you choose NTFS, you can
partition the entire drive as one logical drive, but it will only be compatible with Windows NT.
