Troubleshooting IDE drive problems

Does the system see the drive? Yes - Continue with "Does FDISK recognize the drive?" No - Skip to "Step 4 -- Are the jumpers and cables connected correctly?".

How to check
Your system may display the BIOS settings, including drive information, when the computer is first powered on.  If you do not see this information you will need to go into the BIOS settings to see if the drive is recognized.  To access the BIOS settings, you normally press a certain key or combination of keys, such as F1 or Alt+F1, when the BIOS version information is displayed during the bootup sequence.  See the users guide for your system for instructions on how to view the BIOS settings.
