Symptom
Some users may not be able to perform a long format when the drive is in AHCI or RAID mode on the Intel ICH8 or ICH9 platforms.
In certain RAID mode configurations, the long format may complete but the drives may be marked as "Failed" or the RAID may be in a degraded state. The symptom occurs because the 28-bit LBA command is being used to access LBAs 29-bits in length.
Cause
This symptom is caused by the storage driver that is being used and not by the Hitachi drive. The Hitachi drive is performing as required by the ATA Standard.
Fix
A new release of the storage driver is available for download that corrects this behavior. It is possible your system manufacturer has already, or will integrate the fix into their SATA driver as well. Please check your system manufacturer's web site first for SATA device driver updates. As your system manufacturer may have additional features supported in their solution. If the change has not been integrated into the current driver offered by your system manufacturer, the new driver is available for download from the Intel website.
Please review the terms of your system's warranty and service agreement before loading the driver from a site other than your system manufacturers. Hitachi is not liable for any problems associated with the driver update. In the Intel Download Center, select from the menu-bar: Chipsets->Chipset Software->Intel Matrix Storage Manager. Please install the driver revision 8.2.0.1001 or later.
Alternative Work Around
If there is a reason to not install the updated driver, Hitachi also recommends performing a quick format.
