18M Safe Man-Hours in 2004 Without
Lost Time Accident

The Bureau of Working Conditions (BWC) recently cited Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Philippines Corp. (HICAP) for achieving 18 million accident-free man-hours from January to December 2004. HICAP President Kazuya Takeda received the citation from Attorney Teresita Manzala, Director of the BWC, in a simple program on January 19, 2005 .

"This achievement would not have been possible without the support of HICAP managers, directors and executives," Grace Decena, director of the administration department, emphasized. In her congratulatory address to the HICAP community, Atty. Manzala noted that the milestone is an assurance that Hitachi employees are being provided with a safe and healthy workplace. "Achieving no lost-time injury by a company with more than 6,000 workers is not an easy task, considering the occupational risks and hazards that go with the manufacture of hard disk drives," Atty. Manzala pointed out. She added that the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the BWC in particular, was happy to note HICAP's commitment to attain the objectives of the government's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards.

The BWC director, who has since assumed a new post as labor attaché to Israel , also thanked the HICAP community for supporting the BWC's policies and programs relating to OHS. She assured the assembled HICAP executives that "the same dedication and support will be given to companies like Hitachi, which display its commitment to the promotion of a safe and healthy workplace." According to Decena, HICAP had actually achieved its 12 million safe man-hours milestone in the eight-month period from January to August 2004. The commitment of the HICAP management and the employees' implementation of OHS activities had extended the streak to 18 million man-hours by Dec. 2004.
