Deskstar 7K1000 Receives High Marks for Performance and Capacity
Hitachi met its commitment to begin shipping the world's first terabyte hard drive to retail customers in the first quarter of 2007. Along with the arrival of the Deskstar 7K1000 on store shelves, Hitachi has received a series of positive independent reviews of the one-terabyte HDD.

"Hitachi Global Storage Technologies makes exceptionally good drives. Case in point: Hitachi's new large Deskstar 7K1000 SATA drive performed well when placed under constant I/O testing for days. The 7K1000 is 1 Tbyte in size so it is large enough for the most demanding jobs on servers and PCs."

"We were gobsmacked by the performance of the Deskstar 7K1000. It's a seriously quick drive....In fact, it's so good we recommend throwing away your Raptors for a couple of these babies....If you're in the market for some big storage, the Deskstar should be your first port of call."

"Everyone remembers their first, be it a kiss, a car, or the clumsy back-seat combination of the two. As the first hard drive to reach the terabyte mark, Hitachi's Deskstar 7K1000 will be remembered, too. Squeezing a trillion bytes into a 3.5" hard drive form factor is a monumental engineering achievement—one that rival hard drive manufacturers have yet to replicate and bring to market."

"...Nonetheless it is still the first terabyte drive, so the award goes to Hitachi for crossing the line first. Much like AMD hitting 1GHz first, Hitachi will probably be long-remembered for this technical achievement."

"You can never have too much money or too much storage. IРІР‚в„ўll be the first to admit that IРІР‚в„ўm a little bit of a pack rat. I donРІР‚в„ўt like throwing things away. So I still have on my hard drive, my personal statements that got me into college....The Hitachi 1TB drives come very highly recommended."

"Hitachi's terabyte drive is nothing short of a watermelon. It's the fastest of all the drives in its class, of which there is one, and even tops the drives that hover around the meager 500GB mark. Toss in the terabyte of storage, and you get an absolute winner."

"First off -- do I really need to say it? One Terabyte of unformatted capacity is currently the top dog and no other hard drive maker currently has anything out to compete at that level. You can store tons of movies, music and game data on it and add a second one if you need more. Secondly, it's very quiet -- even during sustained data transfers, you can barely hear the darn thing.
Finally, its overall data throughput is insanely fast -- its multi-platter setup (5 200GB platters), high areal density and 32MB of cache means that it's among the fastest -- if not the fastest -- 7200rpm drive you can buy right now. "

"Perhaps partly due to its huge capacity and partly due to Hitachi's tradition of wringing the last bit of performance out of its ATA and SATA drives, the Deskstar 7K1000 displaces WD's Raptor WD1500ADFD as the fastest drive around when it comes to single-user performance. The biggest story, of course, remains the drive's enviable capacity. When considered along with the drive's leading performance, the 7K1000 stands overall as the drive to beat."

"Today we are looking at the largest capacity hard disk drive around, the 1TB Hitachi DeskStar 7K1000 HDD. This drive not only has massive storage capacity, but it bests the Western digital 10k RPM Raptor in several benchmarks. If you are a hard care PC gamer looking for more space for your games, a digital music fan or a lover of digital video the Hitachi 7K1000 HDD is the drive you want in your PC."

"We consider the Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 the best 7200 rpm drive we have tested to date. This is quite the accomplishment considering this is Hitachi's first 3.5" form factor drive that utilizes perpendicular recording technology. We found the write performance and sustained transfer rates to be excellent and class leading in several of our test results. The drive also offers a very balanced blend of performance across a wide variety of business and home applications. The 7K1000 even has the best overall thermal and acoustic characteristics of the high performance 7200 rpm drives in our tests. For these reasons, we award the Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 our Gold Editors' Choice award and highly recommend the purchase of this drive if you are currently looking for a high-capacity drive with performance to match."

"All things considered -- including the price, $400! -- Hitchai's 7K1000 rocks. Absolutely rocks. It's speeds are certainly comparable, and in most cases better than, the current batch of similarly sized market leaders. And that's without even considering the big picture; you're getting a terabyte of storage. A terabyte. 1,000 gigabytes. And it's only $400!"
