The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive issued by the European Union (EU) restricts the use of certain hazardous substances from electronic products sold in Europe beginning July 1, 2006. Hitachi began offering RoHS compliant products more than a year ahead of the EU compliance requirement. In particular, Hitachi hard drive product models introduced in February 2005 and beyond meet the requirements imposed under the RoHS Directive. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive was created by the EU and is designed to minimize the disposal of electrical and electronic equipment into landfills. The WEEE Directive requires that a specific marking (i.e. crossed-out wheeled bin logo or "Dustbin Logo") be included on certain end-user products to identify them as items covered by this legislation. Hitachi GST encourages users of its products not to disassemble them into components, and that disposal of products be done in accordance with local laws.

For the convenience of our customers who sell Hitachi products in EU countries, Hitachi began labeling all generic hard drive products with the WEEE symbol (dustbin logo shown at right) in January 2006. Currently, the WEEE symbol is applicable only in the EU.

Hitachi introduced its first RoHS compliant products in 2004 with the 1.8- and 2.5-inch Travelstar product lines. Use the product matrix below to determine which Hitachi GST hard drive products are RoHS compliant as of March 31, 2006.
