Greenhouse Gas

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (GST) is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through two specific areas of focus:

  • Efficient energy consumption in business operations
  • Develop and produce energy-efficient products

Since its founding in 2003, Hitachi GST has made significant achievements in both these areas.

Energy Consumption

Hitachi GST locations (including manufacturing, development and research) consume several types of energy sources. Energy consumption is measured by CO2 emission value. In 2006 we achieved a 20 percent reduction in CO2 emission levels per drive produced compared to the same measurement in 2005. See chart below. By 2010, our goal is to achieve a 30 percent reduction from our 2006 per-unit usage.

Energy-efficient Products

Hitachi GST is focused on producing hard disk drive products that require less power to operate. Several technologies have been developed and implemented by Hitachi to assist in achieving this goal. Design features like Hitachi Voltage Efficiency Regulator Technology™ (HiVERT), Enhance Adaptive Battery Life Extender™ (ABLE) and multiple low-power modes are helping to drive reductions in CO2 emissions produced during the product lifetime.
In addition, improvement in hard disk drive capacity results in a higher energy efficiency index, a measurement of Watts consumed per gigabyte (W/GB) which is one way the industry measures energy efficiency. Although power requirements to spin a higher-capacity drive may be the same as lower-capacity models, fewer drives are required to achieve the same storage space. As an example, see chart below.
